Jeff Johnson, President of the Washington State Labor Council believes that “We are facing an existential crisis.”
Citing rising sea levels, ocean acidification, forest fires along with the many symptoms of climate change, Johnson says, Something needs to be done.
To this end he supports a new initiative I-1631.
“It is about investing in clean energy alternatives, clean air and healthy forests,” Johnson writes in his recent article in The Stand.
The bill would impose a carbon tax on certain businesses that would raise about 1.3 billion dollars. Seventy percent of that money would be invested in clean energy firms like solar wind and what Johnson describes as “deep dive energy efficiency”
Another highlight in the bill is a fund dedicated to “Just Transition” program for workers, their families and communities.
